Online Colleges In Alabama

The same body that oversees Alabama’s physical public campuses, the Alabama Commission of Higher Education, is also in charge of the state’s vast and expanding online college programs. This provides an extraordinary degree of continuity and accountability throughout Alabama’s expansive distance-learning program. Online colleges and degree programs are available at many of Alabama’s community colleges, four-year public universities, private universities and technical colleges. Because they are accountable to the Alabama Commission of Higher Education, they are fully accredited.

Among the state’s many distance-learning programs are:

# ~ The University of Alabama — the state’s flagship university and the largest school in the state — instituted a groundbreaking distance-learning program called “Bama By Distance”. This comprehensive online program offers individual courses, as well as full degree programs, with special divisions for active military and veterans.

# ~ Alabama State University — a historically African-American school, Online Colleges in Alabama class through the learning management system Blackboard, which allows students to complete assignments and attend classes without ever entering a classroom. Auburn University at Montgomery — this satellite campus of well-known Auburn University makes up for its smaller size by offering complete coursework, degree pursuit and individual classes through an online, distance-learning program.

# ~ Lawson State Community College-Birmingham Campus is among several Online Colleges in Alabama that participate in the “Electronic Campus” program. Electronic Campus is a network established by the Southern Regional Education Board, which promotes distance learning at colleges and universities throughout the Southern United States.

There are also several for-profit, private institutions located that offer online colleges in Alabama, certificates and degrees. These institutions are not, however, under the direction of — or accountable to — the Alabama Commission of Higher Education.
